Today I ran twice trying a little experiment with running. I ran two tempo runs in one day.
Not really pushing them as hard as I could because I knew I would run twice.

First run I ran 11.1 miles at a overall pace of 6:25 in 1:11:23. This was the worst weather and hardest stretch I've ever had to run for two miles. The winds were up to 50 mph and it was pouring rain. Good think I had my waterproof North Face jacket on that I bought at the last minute in Boston for that marathon. I felt for two miles that I was jogging rather than running and the wind several times knocked me clear off the road. I've never experienced anything like this before. This is the first time I wanted to quit the run and go home. Where are Dorothy's Wizard of OZ slippers when you need them.

Okay here is where it starts to get ugly 6:18
6:51

5:57 (finally was away from the wind)

7:05 (cool down)

This afternoon I ran 7:40 at a 6:36 pace in 48:34. The wind was still there at noon but not as bad as this morning. I felt pretty fresh in this run considering it was three and a half hours later.

Totals 18.5 miles

Tomorrow I will do the same thing (maybe depending on the weather) but with easy runs.

Guys I need some advice I'm thinking about running the June 9th Teton Dam Marathon http://www.dammarathon.com/pdf/courseelevationmap.pdf or July 24 Des News. marathon. I feel pretty fit to run on June 9th, but the Des News was a fun one last year too. Or should I just run both?

Kory,

First of all you had a great workout today. Again, yet another indicator of your fitness and ability to run at least 2:45.

As far as running the Teton Dam Marathon I say go for it. You are fit and ready to run and it sounds like you are itching to run as well. The course does not look like the fastest course but I think you could still run at least 2:50 and have a shot at the win depending on who shows up. Go run it with the attitude that you are racing to win versus shooting for a specific time. You have the opportunity to not worry about time and just go run. Worst case it will be another long run under your belt that you will benefit from in the long run.

As far as Des News goes wait and see how you feel after Teton Dam. My thoughts are that Des News has a high risk of being too hot to run very fast anyway. I guess my recommendation would be to run Teton Dam and race it for place versus time (the time will come anyway) and then focus on running a couple shorter races (5k/10k/1/2) in late June and early July. Then from mid July until Early SEP put the focus back on preparation for Top of Utah on SEP 15th. Then come to Top of Utah and run with me (I need someone to run with) and shoot for a 2:40!

I hope this helps.

Kory,

Sweet workout. I am impressed! Two tempos in one day. I hope you can walk tomorrow...

I agree with Ted. Run the Teton Dam run and play Des News by ear. The Dam race looks fun. I have heard only bad things about Des News and wouldn't want to put all my eggs in that basket. I am planning on running the Des News 10K so you could join me for that. TOU is a great race on a great course. You could run well there and still have time to recover for St. George (if you get in).

I ran Des News last year and it's really not that bad. I actually had a PR at the time (3:13) then I run Top Of Utah two weeks after the Pocatello Marathon and I got at time of 3:02 at Top of Utah. I will consider running the 10k with you Cody. I can't wait to hear about your PR in Ogden.

I thank you for Ted's and your advice it does help.
